Looking for a feel-good movie? A movie filled with love, friendships, laughter, and some tears. I shared some of my comfort movies that feature all of these. These movies are feel-good movies that are perfect for the Fall season. Some movies even feature fall scenes.
"Akeelah and the Bee"
Keke Palmer plays a young girl named Akeelah Anderson. After winning a spelling bee she is approached by Lawerance Fishburne. Fishburne wants to mentor Akeelah to become an excellent speller and enter into competitions. There is relevance on both parts to work together due to their past.
I love how this film really showcased Palmer's talents. I also like how she can act alongside actors such as Fishburne and Angela Basset.
"The Wiz"
The retelling of "The Wizard of Oz "has another impressive cast. Staring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Nippy Hussle. Ross plays a Harlem teacher who is taken away in a storm when trying to save her dog.
There are some great musical numbers such as my favorite "Ease On Down the Road." I also like how the movie includes so many stars, like Richard Pryor and Lena Horne.
"Cinderella"
This is a wonderful retelling of the classic story. There are many stars in the movie such as Brandy, Whoopi Goldberg, and Whitney Housten, Jeffery Alexender. The music and singing are wonderful since two powerhouse singers are in the movie.
"Twitches 1 and 2"
Twitches 1- and 2-star Tia and Tamera Mowry. They play yet again twins separated at birth. This time however a dark force in their magical kingdom is the reason for their separations. This dark force destroyed their father and tried to do the same to twin infants. Their guardians take them into our dimension. They are raised in two different households.
They met two college-age adults at a store. They form a bond that is almost broken again by a dark force.
It is a cute family movie that I am sure children and parents will enjoy. Especially parents who grow up watching Sister Sister.
If you like this one, make sure to check out Seventeen Again which stars the twins and their younger brother Taj.
"Remember the Titans"
Denzel Washington stars as the first black football coach in a small town. The football also has integrated. this of course causes issues with the players and other coaches. Denzel Washington must bring the team together, win, and deal with the racism in the town.
Denzel Washington is excellent in this movie and really showcases his talent. You feel his joy, pain, and anger in this film.
The film is based off the life of the late Coach Boone.
"Waiting To Exhale"
Everett Collection
I did not see this movie until I was an adult. I am glad to watch it as an adult because I have the experience to understand what the characters are going through.
The movie is about four Black women (Loretta Devine, Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Lela Rochon) all going through various relationship issues. The women all support each other through their various trials.
I love seeing Black women getting together and supporting one another. I would love to see more films about Black women uplifting one another.
The acting in this movie is excellent (especially Angela Bassett) and soundtrack is phenomenal.
"Love and Basketball"
You find that most basketball and football films are considered Fall films. It makes sense because both sports seasons happen in the fall. This one is a romantic comedy. About two best friends (Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan who met over a game of basketball. The two grow up and of course turn from best friends to lovers.
This movie also has excellent cast of actors such as Regina King and Alfred Woodard.
"Just Wright"
Queen Latifa and Common star in a romantic comedy. Queen Latifah is a physical therapist who by chance meets an NBA basketball player (Common). They chat and things lead to another. The other is her cousin going out with him instead. Latifah works instead for Common after he is injured.
I love their first meeting because you get to see that they do have a lot in common (pun was not intended). She loves basketball and cars and so does he.
I also love how their relationship changes over time. I also love that Queen Latifah's character was not curved because she was plus size. It is refreshing to see the love interest be a plus-size woman and she is not seen as a joke.
Overall, it is a great movie to watch if you are a fan of basketball and Queen Latifah.
"Drumline"
Everett Collection
A smart mouth freshman Nick Cannon gets a band scholarship at a historic Black college. Even though he is a talented drummer his bold and unpolished approach gets him in trouble with the leader of the band. Also, the fact that he cannot read music is becoming obvious. He may not win him over, but it wins the heart of upperclassman dancer, Laila (played by Zoe Saldana).
He not only has to win the leader over, but he and his bandmates must win the battle of the bands. Can he overcome his lack of reading music and bond with the leader? You have to watch to find out.
I love this movie because when it came out my sister and cousins were attending a fabulous HBCU as well. I think this film really showcased the talent at historic Black colleges and universities. It also showed their unique culture around bands at the school. Seeing a band like there's is an experience like no other. It makes me proud to be an HBCU graduate.
"The Longshots"
Another film that stars a young Keke Palmer. This time Palmer is playing a young girl who wants to join the Pop Warner team. Ice Cube plays her coach and uncle.
Ice Cube notices that his niece can throw a football very well. He wants her to join his team. However, some people do not want a girl to join a boy's football. time.
This movie is also based off a true story.
"Brown Sugar"
Everett Collection
Stars Sanaa Lathan and Taye Diggs star as best friends in this romantic comedy. They formed their friendship over a love of Hip-hop. Both grew up in careers doing what they love. Sanna is a writer who writes about Hip-hop and Taye works at a record company. Their chemistry is good, but they are seeing other people.
Conclusion:
All of these movies are comforting in their own way. I think most of us enjoy watching films that gives us joy especially during Autumn. I think that is why most of these movies are in somebody's top ten or twenty list.
Next month I am going to share some of my favorite Holiday movies.
What movie is your favorite? Is there a movie that you have not seen before?
