Mystery Books to Read this Fall

I did a blog post on books that I have read and love reading. This time I am doing books that I never read but find intriguing. All of these books are great for fall because they are mysteries, suspense, or horror.

I am featuring mystery books written by Black women.

Beloved

My favorite book on the wish list is Toni Morrioson's Beloved. I read this book, but it was so long ago. That is why I want to reread. Toni Morrison is one of the best writers. I love her style and how she writes for African-American people. Which is why I relate to the things she writes.

Morrison's Beloved takes place in Ohio after the Civil War. The main character's name is Sethe. Sethe is a former enslaved woman. Sethe has lost her husband and buried her child. Sethe lives with her mother-in-law, Baby Suggs, has known, and her daughter, Denver.

A disturbing apparition named Beloved visits Sethe. Sethe tries to fight off Beloved and prevent her terrible past from haunting her.

When No One is Watching

Written by Alyssa Cole, this book is about a Brooklyn neighborhood. The main character’s name is Sydney Green. She is a native of Brooklyn. But her neighborhood is quickly changing.

Condos and for sale signs are sprouting out like weeds. The neighbors she had all of her life are now disappearing. Sydney goes on a walking to tour. She wants to find out what is going on.

While checking out her neighborhood, she find Theos. Theo becomes her unwanted assistant. Theo is a new arrival in the neighborhood. Sydney and Theo find their neighbors may not be moving after all. However, the push to revitalize the area may be more sinister than Sydney and Theo thought.

Can Theo and Sydney trust each other long enough to find the truth? Or will they disappear like the others?

This book sounds interesting to me because it reflects what its people feel about the gentrification of neighborhoods.

Grown

Enchanted Jones is the main character of this book. The Seventeen-year-old wears a lot of hats because she is the oldest girl. Enchanted has to help her overworked-hold parents. Enchanted still is a little girl who loves Disney movies.

She also loves to sing. She is excited to audition for pop artist Korey Fields. Fields convinces Jones' parents to allow the teen to go on tour with him as a singer. Fields abuses Jones and holds her captive.

When Fields dies, Enchanted is the prime suspect.

Though the story is traumatic and sad because of the exploitation of young girls, it is realistic. The story is ripped straight out of the headlines about singers and other artists exploiting girls with promises of being famous.

This story is also realistic because society blames sexual assault victims. Girls are seen as being grown and promiscuous, which probably is why the story is entitled Grown.

Jackal

Liz Rocher is coming home but does not want to go back. She does not have fond memories of her hometown, Johnstown, Pennsylvania. It is a predominantly white town. Liz is African American and faced a lot of hate in her hometown.

But she wants to see her best friend get married. She knows she will see some passive-aggressive individuals. But she is not a kid anymore and can handle herself.

During the party, the newlywed’s daughter, Caroline, is missing. The only thing left behind is a white fabric covered in blood.

The police look in the woods for Caroline. Liz, however, thinks it is a pattern. This is not the first a child has gone missing on a summer night at an event.

Her classmate, Keisha Woodson, went missing years before, on a night like Caroline’s disappearance. Keisha Woodson went missing one night with a mysterious man.

The police found Keisha’s body. Caroline digs they’re her hometown records. She discovers multiple Black girls went missing.

Mexican Gothic

This book is going to be developed into a Hulu series. It must be good if people are already making a series out of it.

Noemi receives a frantic letter from her cousin, who recently married. Her cousin begs her to save her from a terrible doom.

Noemi travels to High Place to help her cousin. She is not sure where to find her.

Her in-law's youngest brother helps her. He seems to be a kind person. However, Noemi feels he is hiding something about their families' secret. There are many secrets in the High Place.

The family wealth has kept them from public interference. Now that Noemi is her, she is a threat because she is determined to uncover the truth.

This gothic book is the perfect read for fall. Since it includes some horror, suspense, and romance.

Dead Dead Girls

Dead Dead Girls is a mystery told during the Harlem Renaissance. In 1926, a young Black woman is dying. The main character, Louise Lloyd, finds the girl at Maggie’s Cafe. This is the third die in the city.

Louise Lloyd cannot ignore what is happening in Harlem. Despite experiencing her own trauma in the past, she has to deal with the aftermath of this recent murder. The police implicate Louise in the murder. Two cops arrest her. She has no choice but to find the actual murderer. Louise wants to catch the murderer before he kills anyone else.

I am fascinated with the book because I always love the history of the Harlem Renaissance. I cannot wait to read about the clothes and slang terms they used during that period.

A Deadly Inside Scoop

A Deadly Inside Scoop appeals to me the most because this is the type of book I normally read.

Recent MBA grad Bronwyn Crewse has inherited her family's ice cream shop in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She is renovating her family business back to its former glory. Bronwyn is also including family recipes and creations back into the menu.

These updates cause the grand reopening to not happen in summer but in fall or winter. This causes her reopening not to seem to be as big of a turnout.

To make things worse, one evening she finds a body in the snow. It turns out the grifter was once a person her family could not stand.

This causes Brownyn's dad to be accused of the man’s murder. Instead of only focusing on her business, she has to find the actual murderer. With the help of best friends, she is going to free her dad.
