Best Ways to Allergy Proof Your Home

When I was first diagnosed with allergies, I was told there was nothing I could do about it. This is because of all the things in the environment that could trigger an attack. But I later learned there are things I can do to help manage it.

If you suffer from allergies, you may not realize all the things you may need to do. This post will help you figure out products you may need to avoid and what products you may need to use. I will also focus on how to take care of the things you have to prevent future allergy symptoms.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor but rather a person who suffers from allergies. It is always best to consult with your doctor if you need help.

Washing Linen

The easier thing to do is to wash your sheets and other linen at least once a week. This is a great thing to do if you suffer from allergies to dust mites. Make sure you wash your linen in hot or warm water.

I know some people use a clothesline to hang their clothing on. This is not recommended if you suffer from any tree or pollen allergies. It is best to use your dryer if you are allergic to any trees.

Curtains

It is also recommended that you wash your curtains at least one time per week. Also, wash them in hot or warm water.

Carpets

For those who are allergic to dust mites, you may also want to get rid of carpeting. If you can. Carpeting allows for dust mites and other allergy triggers to accumulate. It is best to use tile or hardwood flooring. If you live in an apartment you may need to vacuum your carpeting at least once a week. Use a vacuum that has a small or high-volume vacuum cleaner.

If you use rugs, pick ones that are easy to wash. The same goes for floor mats.

Windows

Close your windows and try to use your air conditioner.

Furniture

Buy furniture. Furniture that is made of wood, metal, plastic, or leather.

Clutter

Remove old newspapers, magazines, knickknacks, and paper from your home you don't need. These items have a tendency to collect dust. Store children's toys in plastic.

Fireplaces

Avoid using wood-burning fireplaces and opt for gas instead.

Plants

Choose plants that would help purify your air. Also, add aquarium gravel to your plants to prevent mold.

Walls

Get rid of wallpaper and use tile. If tile is something, you don't want to use mold-resistant paint.

Tubs/Sinks/ Showers/Toilets

Dry off tubs, sinks, and showers with a towel. Use products that prevent mold from happening. Always fix leaks.

Storage

Store clothing and collectibles in bins.

Dehumidifiers

Buy a dehumidifier. Keep doors and windows closed to prevent moisture which causes mold.

Control Pests

Regularly clean counters, and sinks, and take out trash. Install traps to kill pests. If traps don't work hire an exterminator.

Get a Trash Can with a Lid

It is best to have a trash can with a lid to prevent rodents and other pests from entering your home. You can find one here
